In our culture today that question probably sounds like nonsense. We place ourselves as the final authority in life on all matters, however, this isn’t very logical because all we have to do is look back on the last 6-months of our lives to see that our “final authority” isn’t very reliable.
This is why Scripture is so important.
I know there are some objections and concerns so let me respond quickly:
On Sunday, we taught about the importance of North Village Church personally being involved in starting new churches. We identified three primary ways we can participate today:
How to give: (Deadline ends Friday at 12pm)
– Pay Pal (Just put Church Plant Sunday in the memo)
– The City (Drop down window: Church Plant Sunday)
– Mail: 8705 Shoal Creek Blvd. Suite 201, Austin TX 78757
1. I didn’t grow up going to church: I didn’t either. When I first started reading Scripture I thought David and Goliath was about a bear. It’s okay. You have to start somewhere.
2. I don’t like to read: That’s a lie. You read fiction junk all the time about vampires and hunger games. You read about sports. You read about music. You have all the draft beers memorized at the Flying Saucer. You can do this. It is simply a matter of you coming to a place where you decide if you want to stay in this fight.
2 Timothy 2:15, “Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth.”
This verse might sound complicated. You see words like, “Approved, diligent, workman, and accurately handling the word of truth”, but it simply means we need to be growing in our understanding of Scripture. Sometimes this can seem a bit broad so let me give you 3 Stages of growing in your understanding of Scripture:
When we look at Scripture we see the Apostle Paul find his confidence and boldness as an “Apostle of Christ Jesus.” It is easy for us to assume the authority comes from the title “Apostle” but the only reason it carries any authority is because it is connected to Jesus. He found his confidence in Jesus?
Consider all the places where we look for confidence and boldness in life. We easily turn to our physical appearances. If we feel like we are in shape and eating healthy then we walk with a little pep in our step. We also turn to our finances. If our savings is growing then we feel confident about life. We turn to our circle of friends also. If they are inviting us places and including us in social activities then we tend to feel better about ourselves.
In 2010 I was asked to pray for our city council. You can look at a video of the prayer here: http://austintx.swagit.com/play/10052011-686/#2
On April 11th, I will have another opportunity to pray for the city council and I see it as a great opportunity to come along side our city council members for spiritual encouragement. I am sure they have personal agendas. I am sure this is something they are doing to advance their career in some capacity. But, I am also sure they are under immense pressure. Please take a moment to pray for the leaders of our city today!
North Village Church has recently created a tool to help us stay connected with people and living on mission with Jesus. It is a simple tool to help us:
– 3 people to pray for
– 2 people to serve
– 1 person to have spiritual conversations

As we move throughout our series of Art of Neighboring we have found how easy it is to get overwhelmed by all the people we come in contact in a day. Recently we found a helpful resource that helps us break down our relationships to the immediate 8 people we come in contact with throughout a week. It is really helpful.
Click on the link below and you can use this helpful tool as well.
1. Identify a relational context (Home, work, or hobby)
2. Identify the names of those 8 people. If you don’t know their names then this is a great place to start!
3. Identify something relevant in their life. It could be where they work, went to college, grew up, etc.
4. Identify something in their inner life. Where are their passions, fears, dreams, etc?
It is something simple that helps us take tangible steps of getting involved in the lives of other people!
At North Village Church we are going through a series called Art of Neighboring. It is really the foundation of why we started the church because when we look at Scripture we see Jesus said the greatest commandment was to, “Love the Lord your God wth all your heart, all your soul, and with all your mind.”
The second is, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
This isn’t a job description for pastors or people who are really socially awkward. This is Jesus speaking to His people and inviting us to be involved in what He is doing around the world. It is a simple charge, but one that often gets lost in the busyness of life.
That is why we are challenging everyone to submit their phone number so we can send weekly texts to help encourage us in this direction.

As a pastor of a church in Austin, TX one of the most common questions / frustrations I hear from parents is how easy it is for their children to be self-centered. Think about it this way:
And we wonder why our children find it so easy to be self-centered. They are practically treated as royalty as the rest of the world go to and fro tending to their needs throughout the day.
Now this doesn’t mean we need to neglect our children. Our children are a blessing from the Lord. I love being a dad. I love the hugs and kisses. I love seeing the world through their eyes. I love taking care of them. It is a joy, but at the same time I want to be aware of the messages I am sending them throughout the day and throughout their life. Consider how difficult it will be for them one day when:
I have found that one of the biggest challenges for our 20 year old’s today in our culture is that they get out of college expecting to begin their life where their parent’s finished in life. They expect their parent’s spending money, their parent’s nice house, their parent’s nice car, their parent’s nice vacations, and for the most part they don’t expect to work really hard to get those things in life. Therefore, how do we respond as parents today to set our children up for success tomorrow? Here is my top 10 list below:
10. Model to Your Children: What do you live for? What do you run to? Where do you invest your money and time? Children don’t always listen, but they are always watching. If they see you living a life that is for your self they will naturally follow your example. One of the best things you can do with them is bring them along with you as you invest your money and time in the lives of other people.
In the spring our groups are going to study through 2 Timothy. This is a great time to not only learn about Scripture, but specifically see how God has wired us to be involved in the lives of other people. As we study through 2 Timothy we are going to see the Apostle Paul come along side Timothy to continually remind him of the gospel and Jesus’ work on the cross.
This is so helpful for us to remember how important it is for us to be reminded of our deep need for Jesus. To follow along you can download the material HERE.
Over the last six weeks our church has been able to teach on sexuality. It has been great! A little awkward at times, but overall really helpful. To help us stay focused throughout this series we continued to come back to this one simple statement: God created our bodies to be sexual beings who experience pleasure without shame.
Week 1: Can we talk about sex in church? God didn’t just create our bodies for only making babies. He also created our bodies to experience pleasure!
Week 2: What about “those” words? Too often we see sexuality as a measuring stick that God is looking for us to avoid. How is sexuality not simply about pursuing purity?
In January 70+ from our church family gathered at the Westin (Domain) to enjoy one another and enjoy God’s goodness. Over the last 3 years God has taken our church of 20 adults and grown us to 130 adults and over 60 children.
I wish I could say it was because of my leadership. I wish could say it was because of our amazing plan. I wish I could say it was our spiritual maturity as we trusted in Jesus. But, really we were just a hodge-podge of people who stepped out in faith to see Jesus do immeasurably more in our hearts and in our love for Him than we could have imagined.
I hope we are always taking moments in our church family and personal lives to celebrate God’s goodness that He continually pours out on us every day.
On Sunday, February 17th we are inviting our church out to Burnet and Northcross to cheer on the runners in the Austin Marathon. At first glance it might just simply look like a typical hangout, but there are themes we are trying to accomplish as a church:
1. Connecting with the community: It would be easy to be upset with the city. Due to the race our Sunday location is completely blocked off, however, we see this as an opportunity to support our city. Over the last 3 years we have met at this corner to cheer on runners and embrace our city.
2. Connecting with North Village Church: Sunday mornings are such a horrible time to actually meet people and get to know one another. Everyone usually puts the best foot forward to put on a smile and you have about 3 minutes of formal conversation as you are walking in or out on Sunday morning. This time on Sunday gives us a concentrated effort to get to know people a little better.
